Bransle de la Royne
Michael Praetorius (1571 - 1621) was a German composer from the early Baroque era. His book Syntagma Musicum provides a nice description of the musical theory of those days and the used musical instruments. Beside writing this book, he collected and composed a large variety of Protestant church music.
This Bransle originates from a collection of dance music called Terpsichore, named afer one of the Muses from the Greek Mythology. Detlef Hasselmeyer made this arrangement for four guitars.
The piece is a Bransle, also referred to as Branle, a French country dance with a monotonous rythm. Apparently this Branle has been dedicated to a queen, because Royne is an ancient spelling for La Reine.
